The Story of Central American Refugees in California
In the book,"Flight Freedom" edited by Rosanna Perez with Henry A.J. Ramos it talks about the story of Central American refugees who settled in California.
There were about eight (8) people interviewed out of about more than one million Central American refugees fleeing the atrocities of war. Carlos who was one of the centers of the stories in the book made a difficult journey to the US and later establish the Central American organizations, and the Salvadorian American Leadership and Educational Fund.
I chose this topic for discussion as the "Flight to Freedom" serves as a living testament on how people power created, seek and made change. In developing countries like the Philippines for example the familiar EDSA people power revolution in 1986 which paved way to demise of the Marcos dynasty and eventual rise to power of Corazon Aquino as President.
During these hard economic times, community organizations like labor unions are very economically important in employment creation. This is why one of the platforms of the new Obama administration is to better respond to to the community and society.
The basic needs of community today are food, housing, healthcare and education. Such things were the prime indicators of growth even during the great depression of the 1930's. As we all know, these common needs don't even need the brilliant and smart economist with brilliant graduate degrees from prestigious schools and universities.
What is important is that we have a sitting president which came from the masses, know to struggle like the common mainstreet American and especially those people in need and with limited income resources.
As the years have gone through in a country as the greatest nation on earth, America part of the challenges deals with issues in youth development, cultural preservation being a nation of diverse cultures and other related community issues such as affordable healthcare.
I deeply hope that one of these days that the administration can think outside the box like the so called developing nations of the east where part of the cabinet had representation on community associated sectors like the youth.
This could be the greatest time of dealing with the education values that are needed in the new age of online technology as a new dept. expressly focusing on the youth would not only give acknowledgement on the next generation of leaders but refocus the new image on how the world looks up to America.
Rather than a nation involved in two wars, dealing with the traditional washington politics of meddling diplomacy on affairs of other nations why not re-brand America's image as a nation more centered on preparing the way for tomorrow's new leaders. After all, the youth was a big voice in the election of the first African American President which totally created a new way in political history.
As historically, we are are democratically principled and that principle created the first mixed and culturally diversed president in the White House.
The story of flight to freedom is similar to the yes we can campaign for change. As any creative marketing genuis would perhaps say, re-branding is changing the image and packaging and just maybe focusing on the youth might do the trick after all.
